Wisdom Engines: Technologies for Evolution and Happiness (2020-)
artist statement below
The visual art project is composed of mixed media animate-drawings, some on antique ledger paper. It began in the time of covid when I could no longer collaborate or create work internationally. This time of holding my seat facilitated a deep internal dive and an intentional and conscious navigation of the subtle dimensions. I began to actively prepare for my own death. The symbolic work attempts to find image to express the awareness of awareness; it is at once a download and an upload.
The Wisdom Engines are tools for “consciousness hacking”. The metaphysical and ontological ideas regarding the nature of being, existence and truth embedded in the work has the potential to disrupt and enliven the general field in which they are experienced.
It is my hope that it could serve to adjust and upgrade the viewer’s internal operating systems. The visual medicine in the artworks can be used to generate subtle awareness, cultivate wisdom, and wick fear.
The drawings explore the elasticity of time and space, the relationship between frequency and image/pattern and the synesthetic correspondence between sound, form, and colour. They investigate the synthesis between abstraction and representation.
Due to their scale, spinal symbolism, and symmetry they encourage a somatic response.
The spiritual work is concerned with the metaphorical and ephemeral horizon line that holds together and separates states of consciousness, the hypnagogic line crossed as one falls asleep, or even as one passes from life into death. It reflects an examination of the liminal space between states, my experience of the texture of threshold and the endeavour to report back accurately from the fractal nature of reality.
It is a record of how Creation witnesses (Self) through the portals of my senses.
The series includes three components: Wisdom Engines, Evolutes and Visual Mantras.
Wisdom Engines are vector maps of perception, boundlessness, and prana/life force.
The series investigates the continual interaction between the dynamics of contraction and expansion and the intersection of the notion of the eternal and that of timelessness or the infinite. They are inspired by a practice of attuning to the cosmos and the natural world(s) and an inquiry into the way energy moves in the organism. My communication with (benevolent) ancestors is interpreted through an ideography that
includes representation of Eastern European embroidery and plant medicine lines.
Visual Mantras investigate the way the I ‘see’ the kinetics of sound as it filters through my perception, and records theses soundshapes in form and colour. The series is informed by a lived realization of how sound connects worlds and describes the information and intelligence found in the traverse.
There is an intuitive dimensional transposition of rhythm and pattern.
The prana of these abstract works, and the fine art archival print renditions, moves inwards and outwards as well as upwards.
Evolutes are drawings of invented allegorical contraptions/mechanical devices that integrate representation of technologies like levers, pulleys, and pumps. This visual language combines geometry, symmetry, and symbolism to suggest how movement and breath can be precisely used to interrupt patterns, to strengthen electromagnetism, to vibrate the psyche and to stabilize energy.
To illuminate the mind.
In the differential geometry of curves, the evolute of a curve is the locus of all its centres of curvature. It is the shape made or point of convergence created when the centre of curvature of each point on a curve is drawn. In the context of this work, this refers metaphorically to the continuum nature of consciousness.
The animate-drawings reflect a practice of observing my own mind and my relationship with the animate, the unseen and the elemental. The work integrates a symbology of micro and macrocosmic orbiting with an interest in myth, storytelling, and ecology. It is informed by the study of geometry and ancient sacred texts from the Yoga and Tantra traditions.
The drawings are inspired by alchemical and hermetic illustrations, Renaissance inventions, and old patent diagrams.
My personal response to the escalation of chaos and uncertainty in the world has been to generate and stabilize a calm and connected psyche. A belief, even, that any cultivation of energetic coherency could be helpful to all beings. This ongoing intention is realized through a regular meditation practice, and by spending much of my time in the wilderness.
It is metabolized in the making of the Wisdom Engine drawings.
