Lines in Blood and Milk (2009-10)
The paintings in this body of work are a tracing of bloodlines, a personal unraveling of ancestry and "raison d'etre". They are a deep exploration of experiences, visions and teachings received while participating in traditional and medicine ceremonies of certain indigenous people of the Americas and South Africa.
Although each ceremony has its own protocol and cultural history, similar aspects are apparent: devotional song and prayer, instruments and music making, endurance, sacrament and sacrifice, visionary states and transformation. Many aspects of this work are "downloaded" during times of spiritual practice.
Research has taken me around the globe and sometimes beyond the borders of my own body. I am intrigued by the unseen and seek to render that which is invisible through paint and brushwork
